Tuesday, May 26 · 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM · Miners Foundry Cultural Center , Nevada City
Add to calendar

Join us each Tuesday evening for African Drum & Dance, hosted by the Nevada County African Drum and Dance Collective. Since 1988, this community has come together to celebrate the rich cultural traditions of Congolese and West African drum and dance. These classes are more than just movement — they're joyful, multigenerational gatherings centered on rhythm, connection, and cultural appreciation.

Drum classes are led by Seydou Dante, a griot from Mali — a West African historian, storyteller, praise singer, and musician. Griots are keepers of oral tradition and wisdom, and through Seydou's teaching we are honored to be connected to this living lineage of music, rhythm, and storytelling.

Each class begins with a thorough warm-up, followed by foundational steps and rhythms. We then dive into dancing — energetic, expressive, and full of joy. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced dancer or drummer, all levels and abilities are welcome.

Schedule:

  • Drum class 4–5pm ($10–$20 sliding)
  • Dance class 5–6:30pm ($20)

Cash preferred; Venmo available at the door. Drums available, or bring your own djembe or dun dun. No one turned away for lack of funds — just let us know.
